Hi Dustin! Went on westendgallery.net...Love your statement! Wish you a great succes, was about to say the portraits are haunting but what I feel about all of your paintings is that they are all portraits and all haunting.

Dear Elaine, your English is very understandable and your comments are kind.
When I read your comment, it took me back to two years ago when I was preparing a show and I wanted it to have a common thread that held it all together. So I decided that I would paint everything as though it were a portrait. I wasn't sure exactly what that even meant, but it gave me something to think about as I worked on the pictures. At the opening of the show, I spoke with different people who referred to the work as portraits of objects, or flowers,etc. This was for me, a moment of connection with the observer, and they may or may not have been aware of it, but it made me feel successful. I have had many discussions with fellow artists about trying to develop a recognizable "style". I think that style is something that comes to an artist after they paint for a while. It's there whether we're aware of it or not, and it's personal. After all, trying to paint like anyone other than yourself is futile, and I can't find the virtue in it. I believe that a painters "style" has little to do with being able to paint a cohesive body of work. I'm interested in what you or others think about this.
Again, thank you for the comments, I guess I'm still thinking in a portrait mode two years later. Or maybe it's because I was also working on several portrait commissions while I was working on the show this year. Either way, I am repeatedly amazed when a viewer such as yourself makes a comment about my work that sort of sums it up. It's nice to discuss the larger ideas and not always get caught up in the details and minutia. Dustin

Reading all your comments here, I hope this isn't the same thing as tagging - though it's similar - and while I'd love a back-link, I'm fine without your linking to me. I love what's been said about portraits, and it fascinates me, because I've wondered whether "portraits of trees," or "portraits of objects," would be recognizable as portraits. Here, I see they are. Yesss!!!
